COURSE DESCRIPTION

A great course for novices and handy as a refresher for beginners. Participants receive a great introduction to an array of techniques for creating screenprinted artworks onto paper, using hinge-clamps stations. Participants will work with water-based acrylic inks, printing onto A3 size cartridge paper and create a small set of prints to take home each week

SCHEDULE

Week one (2.5 hours) - Screenprinting with paper stencil cut-outs

• Introduction to the studio and looking at examples of screenprinted works on paper

• Demonstration of the basic screenprinting tools and equipment (including best practices and safe-handling): screens, squeegees, stirrers and spatulas, hinge-clamp stations, lay-sheets and the pressure-washer

• Demonstration of screenprinting inks for paper: how to mix inks for screenprinting and how to preserve your ink

• Talk about imagery suited to paper-stencils and demonstration of making paper-stencils

• Demonstration of how to screenprint using the paper-stencils 

• Participants make their paper-stencils and screenprint their images

*Participants are expected to bring a selection of objects for week two*

Week two (2.5 hours) - Screenprinting using photo stencils and found objects

Look at examples of prints using found objects

• Introduction to photo stencils. Including how to choose the right screen to suit the image and how to coat screens

• Introduction to using the exposure unit. Including how to operate the exposure unit, how to choose the right exposure time and how to correctly wash-out the exposed stencil

• Participants coat their screens and expose their objects ready for printing 

• Printing using hinge-clamp stations 

*Participants are expected to get a photo ready to use for week four and email a copy in advance to the studio*

Week three (2.5 hours) - Screenprinting using mark-resist film for hand-drawn marks, washes and textures

Look at examples of prints using mark-resist

• Demonstration of how to work with the mark-resist film using ink, oil pastels, graphite sticks and charcoal

• Coating screens and correct exposure time for mark-resist film

• Participants create their swatch of experimental marks, washes and textures and expose to screen

• Print using hinge-clamp stations

Week four (2.5 hours) - Screenprinting with photographic imagery

• Coat screens

• Introduction and demonstration of using Adobe Photoshop to turn a colour photograph into a screenprint 

• Introduction and demonstration of using specialist film-work for creating digital stencils (including printer settings)

• look at photographic style screenprints

• Expose screens and print photos

WHATS INCLUDED

• Acrylic screenprinting inks 

• 220-300g white cartridge paper

• 90-120 mesh screens and squeegees

• Photo-emulsion

• Mark-resist film and drawing materials 

• Film-work for digital images

WHAT PARTICIPANTS NEED TO DO BEFOREHAND

• Wear attire you don’t mind getting scruffy or bring an apron

• Between week one and two participants are expected to get a selection of objects ready to use for week two

• Participants are expected to take a photo of any subject they like and email it to the studio ready for the final week
